Whether you live in Australia or are an international visitor, one of the best ways to relax over summer is to spend a day fishing along our beautiful coastline. This country is home to many outstanding types of culinary fish, including the South Australian Cobbler, Queensland Lungfish, Flathead, Barramundi, Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and Rainbow Fish. Whichever state or territory you find yourself in, be sure to pack your fishing gear and head to one of these excellent fishing spots.

1. Sweers Island, QLD

Located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, this is a private haven for fishermen. You can bet on landing the Sweetlip Fish, as this is the most common species off the isle. You can also land a Spanish Mackerel, Northern Blue Fin Tuna and Coral Trout, depending on the season.

2. Cairns, QLD

This great tourist destination doesn’t just rank as one of Australia’s best fishing spots, but as one of the world’s greatest, given its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. You can land a Black Marlin, the famous Barramundi or a Reef dweller almost without trying. Lure and fly fishing, sport and game fishing – Cairns offers it all.

3 .South West Rocks, NSW

This largely untouched, small fishing village north of Kempsey offers beautiful fishing conditions, even at the height of the holiday season. Charter boats are available and you may even catch some big game fish such as Marlin and Mahi-Mahi, or more regular catches such as Wahoo, Yellowtail Kingfish, Cobia, Dolphinfish, Spotted and Spanish Mackerel, Longtail and Yellowfin Tuna.

4. Port Stephens, NSW

There’s plenty of big game fishing at this blue water paradise with its beautiful bays. Every type of fishing is available, from heavy tackle game fishing and light tackle sport fishing, to saltwater lure and fly fishing. You may catch some fabulously large Blue Marlin here!

5. East Gippsland, VIC

This is where you can land some of the best Dusky Flathead around, with weights of up to 4 and even 5 kgs recorded. Other species include Trevally, Luderick and Bream The best areas to look up are Mallacoota and Tamboon, with their mild climates and beautiful scenery. Lakes Entrance provides a great base.

6. Melbourne, VIC

You don’t have to visit remote areas to find the best places to fish, as Port Philip Bay shows. Common species to land include Snapper, Flathead, Whiting, Small Shark or Pinkies. Take your own boat or hop on a tour.

7. Cressy, TAS

This historically significant town is known for its fly and lure fishing, particularly for trout. So much so, in fact, that it’s known as the Gateway to Trout Fishing Paradise. It even claims to be Tassie’s only ‘troutified’ township, and is host to the annual Tasmanian Trout Expo.

8. Port Lincoln, SA

If you’d like to catch Tuna, Whiting and Squid, then Port Lincoln, with its numerous jetties, could be the place for you. This picturesque and modern town gives access to some of the best game fishing, with Giant Yellowtail Kingfish and Southern Bluefin Tuna, plus locations rich in Blue Groper, Snapper, Nannygai, Blue Morwong and SA's famous King George Whiting.

9. Exmouth, WA

Close to the Continental Shelf and Ningaloo Reef, this area of northern WA offers an abundance of fish species – over 40, in fact! We’re talking light and heavy tackle fishing for Marlin and Sailfish, and sport fishing for Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and Cobia. The list goes on! You can easily put your boat in off the beach, making this a perfect fishing holiday destination.

10. Dampier Archipelago, WA

Where do we start? This maze of 42 islands off the coast of Dampier, far up the western coast, offers the small boat fisherman Marlin, Sailfish, Spanish Mackerel, Yellowfin, Longtail and Mackerel Tuna, Giant and Golden Trevally, and Queenfish ... and that’s not even mentioning the bottom fish. A blissful time is guaranteed!
