Bad Driver Behaviour Gets Everybody Angry

Posted by Jane Clothier on 31 January, 2017

Driving is a privilege, not a right. With that comes the social responsibility to act accordingly and courteously while on the road. Though the Australian government does what it can to educate drivers about the proper conduct while driving, it really does boil down to the person’s attitude and psychological readiness to get behind the wheel.

Here are some of the many incidents that will really test your patience on the road. It is hard not to react aggressively during these situations but just be calm about it and try not to stress yourself because it could ruin the whole course of your day.

Not knowing how to merge

Some people will argue that they’re not aware of the merge or the road closure ahead but seeing the long line should be a clue.

There is a study from the Minnesota Department of Transportation though about the advantages of zipper merges or, just like in the picture, cutting in where the road merges. It makes sense on certain conditions but I’m not sure if it will help the flow of traffic or not especially if drivers do not know what “alternate” means.

Counterflowing

Some people somehow feel privileged to think that they should not be stuck in traffic like everybody else and results to counterflowing because… well, they are privileged. You will not only cause traffic on the opposite lane, you are also endangering the lives of other drivers.

Blocking an intersection

All intersections should be kept clear whether there’s a big sign indicating it or not. It’s common sense. You can’t go anywhere after all because of the traffic so why cause traffic on other roads.

Tailgaiting

This is annoying to the highest level. Add to that the flashing of lights that some drivers love to do especially if you’re driving a smaller car or a less expensive one.

If you run into these situations (which you will if you drive every day), just keep your cool and let it go. Concentrate on reaching your destination safely and in one piece. We discussed road rage and how to avoid it in a recent article, give it a look for some tips in keeping your cool on the road.
