The 2015 Mustang – A Muscle Car for the Millenial Generation?

2015 Ford Mustang

Say ‘muscle car’ to a motoring enthusiast and it’s likely that they’ll say ‘Ford Mustang’ back. That’s an indication of how this iconic vehicle has entered the global consciousness, largely by growling its way through the movies and TV shows of the sixties and seventies.

Yet the Mustang is approaching its 50th birthday and its original fans are even older. The last new Mustang came out in 2005. Since then, a new generation has moved up into the new car market and these younger buyers are more used to cheaper, turbo-charged four-cylinder cars.

They might be enthusiastic about muscle cars, but they don’t necessarily want to own one, and many can’t afford one. In the 21st century, with a green backdrop of declining resources and increasing eco-awareness, even the mighty Mustang has had to adapt in order to thrive and survive.

That’s why the motoring world was abuzz last week with the first glimpse of the 2015, 50th anniversary Mustang. Could Ford pull it off by mixing 50 years of classic design with a more modern need for superb technological features – and safety?

Early reports suggest the new Mustang more than hits the mark. In a clever move that will appease all customers – the purists and more cost-aware buyers – Ford is releasing three engines with different cylinder configurations: the 435 horsepower V8 Mustang GT, the 310 horsepower 2.3L 4-cylinder turbo, and the 300 horsepower 3.7L V6. All models have either 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. New features include a rear suspension upgrade, with technical and safety features including adaptive cruise control, blind spot alerts and forward collision warning.

Early reports say that the GT model has as much torque as ever, and will keep the muscle-lovers happy. The lighter, turbo-boosted EcoBoost and the V6 are more suited to sporty daily driving.

With its iconic styling intact, the new Mustang is the first car ever to offer engines in three different cylinder configurations, all with over 300HP. This innovation that will surely help to reverse a sales decline as it growls past its landmark 50th anniversary.
