New Toyota CH-R - (unToyota-like) Style and Flamboyance

Written by Ken Edwards | 16 June, 2017

Whilst always making strong and reliable vehicles, Toyota have finally re-thought their boring approach to style and design. The CH-R is the vehicle Toyota quite simply had to produce, and the Japanese Car Giant can now offer a small, stylish SUV in the Australian marketplace. The new C-HR is a breath of fresh air. The CH-R stands out as a new direction for Toyota as far as quality, design and driving is concerned.

The C-HR - meaning Coupe High Rider - the compact crossover will join Toyota's extensive SUV line-up which currently comprises the RAV4, Kluger, Fortuner, FJ Cruiser and LandCruiser Prado, 70 and 200 Series models. The C-HR should attract totally new buyers to the brand. Toyota claims it’s disrupting the compact SUV segment with the C-HR… but the stylish-looking hatch is really just disrupting their own Toyota SUV stable.

In Australia, we'll receive the five-door C-HR in 2WD and AWD configurations and with either a six-speed manual or CVT auto transmission. Australian CH-R models will feature a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine good for 85kW and 185Nm, with peak torque arriving from just 1500rpm. Targeting the safety-conscious family market, it was also revealed that the small SUV will come standard with autonomous braking and reversing camera.

On the size front, the C-HR is marginally longer and wider than Toyota's Corolla hatch, or to put that in its rival terms, almost exactly the same size as the great Mazda CX-3.

Toyota's first compact SUV is a break from the norm, and the result is refreshingly awesome !
