Key West is the Southernmost city in the United States, just a 4 hour drive from Miami on the scenic coastal U.S.1 with plenty of interesting (and kitschy) things to do during the 176kmtrip, including crossing 42 different bridges.

No visit to South Florida is complete without road tripping down to the Conch Republic of Key West for a few days. Especially if you like pirates, key lime pie, water-sports, and live music! While you could drive directly from Miami to Key West in about 4 hours, there’s a lot of cool stuff to see around the rest of the Florida Keys.

Unlike the majority of the Florida Keys, which are built from fossilised coral reefs, Big Pine and the Lower Keys are composed of rock. Pine forests give Big Pine its name. There are tarpon, bonefish and barracuda in the channels between the mangrove-rimmed islands; you'll find some of the Florida Keys' most unique flora and fauna.

The Keys are a 200km long string of islands, bordered on the west by Florida Bay and the Everglades National Park back country, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Key Largo has one long main road, dotted mostly with shell shacks, hotels and fast food joints. There’s no quaint downtown or central beach on Key Largo, but there are no crowds to contend with either. 

Along the way, the quaint and quirky beauty and laid-back nature of Islamorada and Marathon may have Australians wishing " I wish Byron Bay was like this". 

However, as we begun, it is the journey that is everything here. Chill out and drive, swim and do whaever takes your fancy. The Gin and Tonic at the end of your trip whilst watching the sun go down over the US' southernmost point in Key West will be worth the wait of this journey, another of the World's Greatest Drives.
