Why The World Is Still In Love With the BMW 1 Series

BMW 1 Series

It may seem remarkable, but BMW has just built its two millionth 1 Series, just over 10 years since the first 1 Series was launched in 2004. The hatchback rolling off the Regensburg production line, for sale in Japan, is a 120i 5-door model, painted a fetching Estoril Blue.

It is probably no coincidence that BMW has chosen this month to launch the latest incarnation of its smallest model. Production has already started on the new BMW 1 Series, another compact model that will be launched to the world in Munich on 28 March, 2015.

The enduring appeal of the 1 Series has everything to do with BMW’s success in bringing elegant design and dynamic driving properties to the compact car market. Australia will be seeing a great deal of the new 5-door model, which is being built at BMW’s plants in Leipzig and Regensburg.

This new model retains and improves on the 1 Series’ sporty character, with a reshaped body and stronger design aesthetics, including greater refinement of the interior with high-gloss black and chrome details. It will also boast powerful and more efficient engines, and a range of innovative equipment features.

BMW has announced that the 5-door hatchback comes with superior powertrain and chassis technology, and a rear-wheel-drive configuration that remains unique amongst compact vehicles, and that is responsible for giving the 1 Series its sporting feel.

Efficient fuel consumption comes courtesy of the latest BMW EfficientDynamics technology, with performance guaranteed by the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. That means you’re looking at a fuel consumption of 8.0-3.4 litres/100 km, depending on engine size – you can order new generation petrol and diesel engines with three or four cylinders, or a six cylinder in-line engine.

Not surprisingly, the in-car technology is leading edge. There’s the standard-fitted iDrive operating system, the radar-based Active Cruise Control system, and the Parking Assistant, with a camera-based Driving Assistant also available. Progressive features seen in other BMW series but only now brought to the 1 Series include full-LED headlights, new additions to BMW ConnectedDrive, the Intelligent Emergency Call tool and BMW TeleServices, and the optional Navigation system, Professional.
