Cue 60’s Soundtrack: VW Relaunches Campervan for a New Generation

VW Campervan Australia

Who can believe it’s over 60 years since the first Volkswagen campervan, or Kombi, as the early versions were known, rolled off the production line? As if that’s not enough, history is about to be made again, for VW has announced that the iconic vehicle is set to be revived.

Speaking recently on the motor show circuit, company board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser gave the first official indication that the vehicle is soon to be born again.

The updated design is sure to reflect aspects of the classic Camper Van, echoing its character as well as its heritage. Neusser told the New York Motor Show that it would retain many of the boxy design features of the early versions, with a short overhang in front, a wide D-pillar behind, and a cuboid centre section.

It will be powered by an electric motor, which will drive the front wheels, while making the low bonnet line possible. Battery packs will be stored under the floor.

The advantage is not only an eco-friendly drive, but also an attractive cost base. Currently at the concept stage, the van will soon become a production design.

The news follows other recent reports that VW is finally recognising the heritage value of the old. The manufacturer has recently started attending major classic car events with a display of period vehicles. No doubt owners of the classic campervans are hopeful that VW may start manufacturing parts once more.

What’s more likely is that VW is trying to harness the strong emotional attachment many campervan owners feel for their vehicles, in the hope that some of it may be transferred to the new model. As we all know, emotions drive buying decisions, no matter how much we try to be objective.

At the very least, by becoming part of the romance between the touring motorist and the campervan, the manufacturer is hoping to draw a new, young generation to the reincarnated version. We anticipate adverts with music evocative of the 60’s, against a backdrop of modern day music festivals.

Is it possible that the new campervan can stir the emotions as much as its predecessors? VW has tried it before with the Beetle, with mixed results. It’s hard to imagine it being possible with the campervan, but one thing is sure: the van that became symbolic of freedom and youth is declining in numbers, and to date, there’s been no other vehicle to replace it.
